Sinking Land and Rising Seas

Approximately 23 million people in Indonesian coastline are under threat of sinking by 2050 due to overuse of groundwater, land conversion and sea level rise.

Referring to satellite data, sea level rise in Indonesian waters is estimated at around 3 - 8 mm per year.

Meanwhile, the estimated land subsidence is estimated to be more drastic, ranging from 1-10 cm per year. In fact, in some places, the decline reached 15-20 cm per year.

The threat of sinking is not only faced by the capital city of Jakarta and the north coast of Java island, but also tens of millions of other people who live on the Indonesian coast, including in West Kalimantan.

However, many of them are not yet aware of this threat.
